Current Initiative

ASN Foundation supports a farmers group in Barekuma Ashanti Region with Micro Credit loans. De farmers are trained in a school garden aligned to one of the GSFP schools. The farmers received six months of practical training in organic farming. The vegetables produced in the school garden are used for the childrens’ school meals. On their own farms organic farming was implemented. There is enough demand for organic products and at the same time farmers are able to save money as they don’t need to buy expensive pesticides or chemical fertilizers. These are replaced with home made compost and natural fertilizers. Still farmers need a start up capital to be able to acquire quality seeds and for, for example transporting their goods: for farmers its however difficult to obtain loans without paying high interest rates. The ASN fund that has been made available to these farmers will be managed by the Ghana Organic Agriculture Network (GOAN). GOAN is a local partner of the Louis Bolk Institute.  GOAN initiated schoolgardens and farmers trainings for Organic throughout various regions in support of the GSFP.
